Reliance Jio-backed startup TWO has introduced its new generative AI platform, SUTRA, which supports over 50 languages and specializes in speech, search, and visual processing. This cost-effective AI model suite was launched with a substantial $20M seed funding secured in February 2022 from Jio Platforms and South Korean firm Naver.

Pranav Mistry, founder of TWO, highlighted the long-standing partnership with Jio, noting the involvement of Reliance Jio Infocomm's chairman Akash Ambani in the startup's development. Mistry, who previously led Samsung’s STAR Labs, is known for creating the innovative SixthSense technology in 2009, a system that merges physical and digital interaction.

SUTRA’s product range includes Sutra Light, Sutra Pro, Sutra Turbo, and Sutra Online, each designed for distinct applications and efficiency levels. These models are being piloted in various sectors by partners in Korea and India.

TWO is also set to introduce ChatSUTRA, a platform utilizing these models for diverse tasks in multiple languages. Additionally, TWO has developed Zappy, a social media app powered by SUTRA, currently popular in South Korea and soon to launch in India. Another of its offerings, Geniya, competes with Perplexity AI by allowing users to search the internet effectively.

SUTRA, distinct for integrating large language models with neural machine translation, excels in understanding both literal and cultural nuances of language. The technology is trained on vast datasets, including millions of conversations from the Zappy app, enhancing its linguistic accuracy.

Mistry is optimistic about SUTRA's impact, especially in the Asia-Pacific market, where he sees significant potential for non-English AI models. The startup collaborates with major telecom firms like Jio, Naver, and SK Telecom to leverage their network capabilities for distributing SUTRA’s services.

The Indian AI startup scene is vibrant, with numerous firms like Sarvam AI, Tech Mahindra, and others developing language models and AI solutions focused on Indian languages and applications. Mistry views the landscape not as competitive but collaborative, aiming to collectively advance AI’s reach and capabilities in India.
